Beckmen YOLA Center at Inglewood Groundbreaking

At the end of May, Music & Artistic Director Gustavo Dudamel, Frank Gehry, YOLA alumni, and city and county leaders gathered for a brief, ceremonial groundbreaking of the Judith and Thomas L. Beckmen YOLA Center at Inglewood to commemorate the historic moment.

At the event, 18-year-old Liliana "Lili" Morales, who has been participating in YOLA since its beginning, was gifted a violin by Dudamel. In Lili's words:

“My YOLA peers and I talk about how our instruments represent much more than just the object by which we make music. They are the embodiment of the hours of practice we put in and the love that we have for music and for one another. At the groundbreaking ceremony for the new YOLA Center, when Gustavo handed me the violin, I thought of how my childhood was spent growing up with YOLA, and that even though I was graduating, YOLA would always be by my side. Whether in college, at home, or with YOLA, playing my violin is a testament to the power music has to bring people together and be tools of social change. I have an insurmountable amount of gratitude for my YOLA family, Gustavo Dudamel, and the LA Phil because their work in communities across Los Angeles empowers young people to not only have hope, but also to be active citizens striving for united communities. Witnessing how much YOLA has grown since it started has been an incredible opportunity, and with the new YOLA Center opening, I can already envision how integral of a role it will play in the lives of hundreds more students just as it did in mine.”
