Judith and Thomas L. Beckmen YOLA Center at Inglewood Now Under Construction

The LA Phil’s Centennial Campaign donors have brought to life the most ambitious project in our Centennial Initiatives and the single most significant investment this orchestra has ever made in its community: the Judith and Thomas L. Beckmen YOLA Center at Inglewood.

In April 2019, the LA Phil closed escrow on the property and within a few short weeks a 15-month construction effort was underway. Music and Artistic Director Gustavo Dudamel, project architect Frank Gehry, YOLA alumni, and city and county leaders gathered at the space last month for a brief, ceremonial groundbreaking to commemorate the historic moment.

At the building’s design unveiling last year, Dudamel connected the Beckmen YOLA Center at Inglewood to a facility that Gehry designed for El Sistema, the Venezuelan program that inspired YOLA’s creation. “It’s incredible how much the physical space raises the level of playing,” Dudamel said. “It changed the whole ambition of El Sistema.”

Though it won’t officially open until 2020, the LA Phil isn’t waiting for the building to be ready to begin community engagement activities in the City of Inglewood. YOLA musicians have participated in Inglewood’s Community Arts Day, the LA Phil has performed at Neighborhood Concerts, and informational meetings have been held with stakeholders in the community.

We look forward to keeping you informed of our progress, as we work to bring the Centennial Campaign's flagship initiative to life.
