Future of Music

Music

“The LA Phil demonstrated once again why it is the most creative and, therefore, the best orchestra in America.”

- Alex Ross, The New Yorker

Future of Music

Always excellent and always innovative, the LA Phil has earned the love of its audiences and the admiration of its peers. Its programming and its players are fearless, treading the ground between past and present like no other orchestra in the world.

A century’s worth of great works, artists and composers have found a home in Southern California with the LA Phil. Our challenge today is keeping that fire alive for another 100 years. Building on the LA Phil’s reputation for innovation and excellence will require ambition, imagination and the support of music’s true believers.

Gustavo Dudamel Sees the Future

Three years ago, Gustavo Dudamel made a career-defining choice: to extend his contract and lead the LA Phil into its second century.

"Sometimes when you make big decisions, you are not sure later that you did the right thing. But I woke up happy, knowing I had made the right choice. I knew I would be here for the Centennial, but even more importantly, for the years after it.”

At that time, the LA Phil and Dudamel chose to change his title from Music Director to Music & Artistic Director.

“This was a signal to the world that the LA Phil is on the forefront as an orchestra and an innovator; honoring our past, but realizing our art form is poised for a long-awaited revolution.

“The music. The art. It is our future.”

Sustain Artistic Excellence

The LA Phil is the best because it attracts the best. The Centennial Campaign will allow us to recruit and retain the visionary artistic leaders and musicians that are the foundation of our excellence. Investing in talent of this kind — the most highly trained, gifted and fought-over musicians in the world — is a costly, but necessary endeavor.

Promote a Culture of Innovation

The LA Phil boasts the most active commissioning program in the country, while supporting innovations in production and multidisciplinary collaboration. The Centennial Campaign aims to build on this foundation, creating a sustainable source of funds from which to innovate.

Expand the World of Music

From orchestral and jazz to world and popular music, the LA Phil has a little something for everyone, but maintaining this level of diversity, artistic quality and curatorial vision is not a simple proposition in the Los Angeles marketplace. By creating a base of support for presentation and production, the Centennial Campaign will enable the LA Phil to connect music’s great artists with Los Angeles’s diverse audiences.
